God Sees You: A Reflection on Single Motherhood & Grace

Have You Ever Felt Overlooked?

As a single mom, I’ve faced moments of doubt, exhaustion, and uncertainty—but through it all, God’s grace has carried me. There are days when the weight of responsibility feels heavy, where help seems distant, and when the silent sacrifices go unnoticed. Yet, even in those moments, God reminds me—I am seen.

Early this year, we experienced rare snowfall in Northeastern North Carolina. While many nearby areas had 5-6 inches of snowfall, I was inside, battling my second round of a sinus infection. As a single parent, illness brings an extra layer of stress—there’s no backup, no one to step in for school drop-offs or daily tasks. For a few days, the snow was a quiet blessing.  Schools closed, and I didn’t have to wake up early, drive, or push through exhaustion just to meet the day’s demands

An Unexpected Knock

One afternoon, as I lay resting, I heard the rhythmic scraping of a shovel. My phone lit up with Ring camera notifications—annoying at first, but persistent. I finally checked and saw something that made me freeze—a tall blonde woman, dressed in black, clearing the snow from my driveway. My neighbor, Jen.

I felt my eyes well up. Why was she outside in the cold, shoveling my snow?

I hurriedly dressed, stepping outside to meet her.

‘Jen! What are you doing? Why are you shoveling my driveway?’

She smiled, pausing to lean on the shovel. ‘Girl, I know you’re a single mom handling everything on your own. My husband did ours, so I figured I’d help you. I needed to decompress, and doing something kind felt right. Plus—you deserve it and so much more.’

Her words hit me deep. Gratitude overwhelmed me, and without thinking, I reached to hug her.

‘Jen, I really appreciate this. I’ve been sick with my second round of a sinus infection, barely able to get up. This means the world to me.’

She waved it off. ‘That’s alright, girl. You just rest and take care of your girls. Let me do this—I need it just as much as you do.’

I stood there, watching her, realizing something profound—God had sent help when I hadn’t even voiced my need out loud.

God Knows. God Sees.

God reminded me in that moment—He knows the secret desires of our heart, even when we haven’t spoken them aloud. I had wished, in passing, for someone to clear the snow, for a partner to help. While I hadn’t said the words, God had heard them.

This reminds me of Hagar’s story in Genesis 16:13-14. After fleeing her mistress, Sarah, Hagar found herself alone in the wilderness—uncertain, afraid, unseen. Yet in her solitude, God met her, speaking directly to her heart.

She responded profoundly:

‘You are the God who sees me.’

Her revelation was life-changing, she was not forgotten, not dismissed. And just like Hagar, single mothers today need that same reminder.

When you drop your kids off at school—God sees you.
When you’re making breakfast—God sees you.
When you’re managing the finances, working tirelessly—God sees you.
When the other parent has walked away, leaving you to carry the burden alone—God sees you.

Know Who You Are!

Mother’s Day isn’t just a celebration, it’s a recognition of the daily strength, love, and resilience that mothers pour into their children.

You are not ‘just’ a single mother. You are:
A CEO, managing a household with strategy and responsibility.
A leader, guiding and nurturing the next generation.
A warrior, carrying emotional and financial burdens with grace.

And while motherhood can sometimes feel thankless—you are seen. By your children, by those who admire your quiet strength, and most importantly, by God.
